Huntington's Disease Market Research
What is Huntington’s Disease (HD)?
Huntington’s Disease is a rare, inherited disorder that causes the progressive degeneration of motor neurons in the central nervous system. Motor neurons control voluntary muscles, i.e., those that we choose to move to produce movements like chewing, walking, and talking. The disease is progressive, meaning the symptoms get worse over time. In the early stages of Huntington’s disease, uncontrollable movements in one’s hands, feet, face, or abdominal posture can occur. These symptoms evolve into chorea – or dance-like movements – that worsen with anxiety or distraction. As the disease progresses, movements become more extreme and behavioral, emotional, and personality changes occur. Most commonly, Huntington’s disease symptoms develop in the mid 30’s- 40 years old, often after children may have been born. In more rare instances, there is early onset of this disease developing in children. HD has no cure and there is no effective treatment to fully reverse its progression. However, medications can help with symptom management.
