What is Sjögren’s Syndrome (SjS)?
Sjögren’s syndrome (SjS) is an autoimmune disorder that affects the entire body, with symptoms consisting of excessive dryness (primarily in the eyes and mouth), along with fatigue, pain, and other major organ involvement. Individuals with other rheumatic diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA) or systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are more likely to develop SjS. About half of all SjS patients have also been diagnosed with another autoimmune disorder, classifying them as secondary SjS, whereas primary SjS occurs in the absence of another underlying rheumatic condition. SjS tends to affect women more often than men, and most patients develop the disorder after the age of 40. The primary symptoms include dry eyes and a dry mouth, though it can also be accompanied by symptoms such as dry skin, dry throat/nasal passages, joint pain, swelling of the salivary glands, numbness/tingling in areas such as the legs, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, shortness of breath, trouble sleeping, and skin rashes. In some cases, SjS can lead to vision problems such as blurred vision and damage to the corneas, dental issues such as cavities, and (though uncommon) damage to nerves, lymph nodes, the lungs, the kidneys, or the liver. Rheumatologists are dependent on use of many over the counter (OTC) products such as artificial tears, dry mouth products and lubricants as well as steroids, but do not have any approved options that treat the underlying disease of SjS. Those with neuropathy involvement rely on treatments like hydroxychloroquine and corticosteroids.
