Polymyalgia Rheumatica Market Research
What is Polymyalgia Rheumatica (PMR)?
Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a condition that effects the joints and inflames the muscles, typically causing them to feel stiff and painful. Other symptoms such as fatigue, difficulty sleeping, difficulty moving, depression, and loss of appetite may occur as well. While the cause of the condition remains unknown, physicians note that those diagnosed are typically women over the age of 65. PMR patients may also develop giant cell arteritis (GCA), also known as temporal arteritis, impacting the arteries in the head and neck while ultimately causing more pain in the form of jaw pain, vision problems, and headaches. Treatments for PMR include corticosteroids such as prednisolone, Kevzara (sarilumab), or off-label use of Actemra (tocilizumab). Other treatments include over-the-counter (OTC) pain killers, disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs), and treatments to help prevent osteoporosis (which may develop while using steroids).
