What is Parkinson’s Disease?
Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive brain disorder affecting the substantia nigra and dopamine systems in the brain, causing motor deterioration and uncontrollable movements. Dopamine typically works with other neurotransmitters in the brain to coordinate motor function (and cognition and emotions!) and without enough dopamine, this balance is disrupted resulting in tremor, rigidity, slow movement, and impaired balance and coordination – all hallmarks of Parkinson’s Disease. Symptoms vary depending on the patient and stage of disease, but in most cases, symptoms begin gradually and worsen over time. Symptom typically start as small tremors in the arms or hands, progressing to shaking, stiffness, and eventually difficulty balancing. One’s face may begin to show little to no expression, and eventually present signs of slurred speech. There is no cure for Parkinson’s disease as of now. However, current treatment options include medications, surgery, and supportive therapies for symptom management.
